Reverend
Cyrus Wilkins
1880 - 1885

Purchased first building that had been made available to church for worship.

...praying, working, and serving God...

It was during the pastorate of Reverend Cyrus S. Wilkins, the congregation’s third leader, that Zion Hill purchased the Church on Humphries and Glenn Streets, which had been donated for worship.  This acquisition came as a result of consistent teaching on property ownership.  Even though African Americans were beaten, robbed and lynched during this period, Reverend Cyrus S. Wilkins taught his members to be thrifty and trust in God.  At this critical juncture in history, the Civil Rights Laws enacted by the Radical Congress were declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court and people of color were at the mercy of the racist-dominated States.  Under these severe handicaps Zion Hill continued to pray, work and serve God.  Reverend Cyrus Wilkins resigned, and the Church had to look for another pastor.
